The stars of Cinema shine in Piazza Maggiore
Punctual as the appointment that par excellence inaugurates the Bolognese summer, one of Europe’s most exciting Outdoor Cinemas returns to Piazza Maggiore.
In the heart of the city, just a few steps away from the spaces of our Gallery, in fact, in a unique setting between the Basilica of San Petronio, Palazzo Re Enzo and Palazzo d’Accursio, the big screen has been set up that will project films and cinematic masterpieces throughout the summer season.
After the last two editions, inevitably characterized by distancing and mandatory reservations, Cinema in Piazza Maggiore reopens in its original guise under the sign of culture but also of aggregation: recreating the common thread that makes this magical square a place of meeting, culture and participation. The program is rich: it starts, as always, with films restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, which this year, among the acclaimed recovered masterpieces, sees the unfailing tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini for the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
The retrospective features “Mamma Roma,” “Accattone” and “Uccellacci e Uccellini.” Particularly heartfelt, among others, is also the tribute to Monica Vitti, unforgettable diva of Italian cinema, remembered here with the screening of some films featuring her and directed by important directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni in “L’Eclisse” or Ettore Scola in “Dramma della Gelosia.” The “Cinema under the Stars” festival, on the other hand, in addition to offering unmissable films on the bill, brings, as has become a tradition, great international guests to the city, confirming the centrality of Bologna and its cinema within the most relevant circuits of the sector.
This season’s guests are Wes Anderson, Paolo Sorrentino and John Landis, but also Stefano Accorsi, with his video stories along the Via Emilia, Pupi Avati and many others. Among world-renowned directors, distinguished guests, restored masterpieces, and tributes (noteworthy is also the one to Woody Allen and Stanley Kubrick, which will close the screening cycle on August 13), Bologna returns to excite visitors and citizens by offering a show within a show where stars shine in the sky and on the screen. The entire program can be viewed on the Cineteca di Bologna website or in the poster already on display in Piazza Maggiore.
