Galleria Cavour, under the direction of Gioia Martini, reaffirms its status as the cultural heart and creative hub of the city of Bologna. From Friday 8 May, the temporary exhibition “Giorgio Bevignani – New York was right” will open its doors at the gallery’s premises at number 9L. Curated by Gaetano La Mantia and Contemporary Concept, the exhibition explores the work of the renowned artist, known for his skilful experimentation with materials.
The link between Bologna and New York, which is also referenced in the exhibition’s title, celebrates the union between two cities dear to the designer. It was in Bologna, in fact, that he attended the Academy of Fine Arts from 1984 to 1986, and it was in Manhattan that his professional and personal journey embraced the artistic language that has made him famous throughout the world.
His years in America, in fact, had a profound influence on his approach: from that point onwards, his art became even more open to experimentation and dialogue with different disciplines, such as science and philosophy. One of the most distinctive features of Bevignani’s work is his use of non-traditional materials: silicone, resins, synthetic pigments and other substances that enable him to create translucent, layered surfaces.
His works often appear "alive", almost organic, as if in a state of constant transformation. The project conceived by Gaetano La Mantia specifically for Galleria Cavour takes the form of a comprehensive exhibition bringing together over sixty works created since the 1990s. Amidst historical works and more recent productions, an exhibition emerges in which matter, light and space function as structural elements.
This is a genuine critical reinterpretation capable of conveying the complexity of Bevignani’s work and his central position within the contemporary art debate. The works will be on display until 13 June 2026, with free admission from Tuesday to Saturday at the following times: 10.00–13.00 and 16.00–19.00. On Thursday 7 May, the exhibition will be preceded by an exclusive invitation-only cocktail party.
